Uniqe and sustainable genetic profile
In the last two years, the average value of a Norsvin Landrace market hog has increased by 58.50 NOK (8.75 $) due to Norsvins precise and intensive selection program.
This genetic progress is based on the change in breeding values of Norsvin Landrace gilts going off-test between September 2004 and September 2006 (see figure below). This shows that it is possible to achieve progress on both market hog related traits and sow productivity traits in the same breed. In NOK, the annual change is largest for the carcass traits, followed by litter size and maternal ability. This is done while meat quality and health traits are practically unchanged. This is a great achievment, considering the demanding task it is to handle the antagonistic genetic relationship between the different traits.
Regarding the near future, we expect the progress in maternal ability to continue its increase.
